What Is Farmhouse Style Decorating?

Farmhouse style is all about using natural materials and vintage decor to create a rustic, country-inspired home.

Many homes with farmhouse decor feature lots of rustic, reclaimed wood and time-distressed materials to give an intentionally aged look. Neutral shades also feature prominently, such as soft white, beige, grey and greige, with the odd pop of colour to let the natural textures take centre stage.

It’s a popular style to have in the home thanks to the warm and cosy feeling it creates, as well as being completely versatile. You can mix farmhouse style with industrial, modern or traditional decor to make your own personal style that is completely unique to you.

To incorporate this style in your home, it’s best done by combining old and new to get the right balance of warmth and avoid it looking too kitsch or cluttered.

What Is A Farmhouse Table?

A farmhouse table should always bring a touch of nature and a rustic feel to any room. They usually come with a chunky wood top made of solid planks such as oak or pine and often have sturdy wooden spindle legs.

Traditional farmhouse tables either come with a classic rustic wood finish or with a painted base for extra charm and character.

You can also buy modern farmhouse tables that feature the iconic thick reclaimed wood style top but with a more contemporary base such as square wooden or iron legs that work equally as well.

Key Elements Of A Farmhouse Dining Table

They’re heavy

Farmhouse tables are often very heavy as they are made with a chunky solid wood top. This, combined with solid wood or iron legs, means it can weigh a lot more than other tables. This may be difficult for those who move often or like to change their interiors around frequently, however, it does mean the table is extremely durable and sturdy. This is a great option for families with children or for those who plan to use the table often, as it will last for years to come.

The bases vary

Farmhouse tables vary in style which means they can suit a wide range of interiors. Whether it’s the traditional spindle style legs that are synonymous with the farmhouse table, square wooden legs or iron a-frame legs, there are multiple different bases to choose from that can completely change the look of the table.

They’re practical

Practicality is key when it comes to farmhouse dining tables. Originally, practicality was the most important thing in a farm house so every item and piece of furniture had to have a purpose and be helpful. This often meant having large, solid tables that would last a long time, but that could also fit lots of people around them and create a surface space for every activity. Most importantly, farmhouse tables are built to last for years to come and usually come with built-in drawers providing handy additional storage.

They are often leafless

A dining table extension leaf extends the length of a table in order to accommodate additional guests. Farmhouse tables offer ample seating, however it does not come with leaves to expand the size of the table.

As a general rule of thumb, you need two feet of table for each person seated to ensure the dining experience is comfortable for everyone. If you want a table that you can extend when you have guests over, but make it smaller when it’s not in use, you may need to look into other dining table options with leaves. However, at Grain and Frame, we offer an extendable option on all our farmhouse dining tables so you don’t have to compromise on the style you want.

Farmhouse Table Benefits

Farmhouse Tables Are Sturdy

Made from solid wood, farmhouse tables are sturdy and are built to last. This makes it a great option for those with expanding families or for those who will use the table daily as it will withstand wear and tear and look beautiful for years to come.

Farmhouse Tables Don’t Have To Be Expensive

Farmhouse tables don’t have to be expensive, especially if you buy second hand. Traditionally farmhouse tables were meant to look rustic with a ‘worn’ look for an authentic country-chic style, so you will be able to find a beautiful kitchen table second hand; any signs of wear and tear will simply add to the look.

Farmhouse Tables Come In All Types Of Wood

Farmhouse tables come in all types of wood so you’ll be sure to find something to suit your needs.

Reclaimed wood is ideal for those who like the rustic look where the table looks like it has a story to tell. Reclaimed wood often has dents and scratches that are original to the timber with signs of old nails or staples within the wood.

This isn’t for everyone, so pine and oak planks of wood are also popular choices, with an equally beautiful but more uniform look. Regardless of the type of wood you choose, due to the nature of wood, every farmhouse dining table will look different with a unique grain and characteristics  – but that’s the beauty of a farmhouse dining table.

A Farmhouse Table Doesn’t Always Mean Large

Traditionally farmhouse dining tables are large, chunky piece of furniture that provides ample seating for the whole family.

However, many retailers now offer farmhouse tables in customisable sizes so you can find a table to suit your space. Another way of saving space is by using benches as seating rather than chairs; this means you can push the table against a wall when not in use which is handy for those short on space.

Paint A Farmhouse Table At Any Time To Give It A Fresh Look

Farmhouse dining tables look great painted, especially when the base is contrasted to the wood table top.

Painting the base of the table is a great way to upcycle a table to make it look brand new, even if it’s a lot older. Neutral, earthy tones are key for the farmhouse trend and allow the natural beauty of the wood table top to shine.

If you’re replacing existing paint, remember to sand the old paint off and ensure the surface is completely smooth before you use a new colour to ensure the finish is seamless.

You Can Restain An Old Farmhouse Table

Similar to painting your farmhouse dining table, you can re-stain the wood too. You may have bought a second-hand table that needs a little bit of TLC, or perhaps you just want to update your current table.

Whatever the reason, wood stain is a great way to change the look of your table, due to the varied choice in colour. Whether you want a clear stain that just enhances the natural beauty of the wood or a tinted stain so that your table will match other furniture in your home, there are plenty of options to choose from.

And, the beauty of staining wood is it’s simple and easy to do yourself at home, whatever your ability. You can read everything you need to know about wood stain here.

You Can Use Any Seating You Want With A Farmhouse Table

There’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing chairs to pair with your farmhouse table. The opportunities are endless and it all depends on what style you’re after – modern, traditional or industrial.

If you’re feeling bold, you could also mix and match your chairs for a style statement – read our guide for more information on how to mismatch your dining chairs.

Alternatively, you can pair your table with benches instead of standard chairs. This look will add to the country feel of your kitchen or dining room. Benches have other benefits too –  they’re great if you want to squeeze in additional people around the table and they take up less space than chairs.

Are Farmhouse Tables Going Out Of Style In 2022?

Farmhouse dining tables are one trend that will never go out of style, and here’s why…

Neutrals Aren’t Going Away

Farmhouse style decor is popular due to its use of soft, neutral colours. Give your dining space a neutral base to start, and you’ll have a trusty backdrop that will never look gaudy or old fashioned.

Farmhouse style is very adaptable and can be combined easily with many other home decor trends. The style is becoming more modern, as people look to incorporate the more rustic, unpolished style of farmhouse chic into their contemporary interiors. Using natural materials such as wood, metal or brick can make any space feel more warm and cosy. It’s the perfect balance of old and new.

Metallics

Using pops of raw materials such as metals is key when it comes to farmhouse style decor. Metal with a black or bronze finish has been extremely popular, so this year it’s all about using accents of gold or silver instead which can help instantly transform a room.

Textures

Using lots of textures is a key element of the modern country look. Add layers of different materials with rough and organic textures such as linen, wool and sheepskin, to bring depth and warmth to any scheme. Blankets, throws, rugs and cushions are a great way to bring comfort and a touch of colour to the space.
